Understanding responsibility occurs on the journey from adolescence to adulthood.

Every day I am challenged with learning the best approach to teach life lessons to our boys. Often, I am left with feelings of frustration- why can't they be responsible and clean up after themselves? And, how is what I am telling them not syncing in?

Then, it occurred to me that my understanding of responsibility was not fully learned until my journey from adolescence to adulthood.

In teaching, often we discern between what is right and wrong and provide direction in this manner to educate our kids. We forget that the worldview of a child is still discovering what makes sense. And, is best learned through experience.

Self reflection led me to an alternate approach of allowing our 7 year old son to create his own plan for what responsibility means to him. And, determine for himself what happens when he chooses to not grow in his actions of becoming responsible.

What approaches have you taken for teaching your kids how to build character in their own journeys of making sense in the world?
